Good news for those who frequent farmer’s markets — like me.
There’s a new market featuring locally grown produce and goods starting this month in Kakaako.
FarmLovers, one of Hawaii’s operators of green markets, is starting up the Kakaako Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Oct. 5 in the Ward Warehouse parking lot along Auahi Street. (This is, actually, the farmer’s market that was held in the upstairs parking lot at Ala Moana Center. But because of mall renovations and the closure of the parking lot, it’s moving to this site.)
The market will run from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday, with vendors selling fresh farm eggs (above), local honey and produce (left), and prepared food that you can leisurely enjoy at the 70-seat cafe with open seating and live entertainment.
“We are pleased to expand our local offerings with the opening of (this market),” said Katie Kaanapu, senior marketing manager for Ward Centers in a news release, “and hope that this will meet the needs of our many customers who love to shop and eat local.”
Uh, that would be me.
What I dig about this market — and the four others FarmLovers runs — is that the market managers, Pamela Boyar and Annie Suite, believe in creating a business incubator for small farmers, food manufacturers and artisans. They want these markets to help them — and the communities — grow. They ensure that 100 percent of the produce sold at their markets is grown locally in Hawaii by local farmers. That’s important to me.
Saturday’s grand opening will feature giveaways of reusable bags to the first 500 customers, local entertainment and keiki activities.
See you at the market!

Thanks again Cat! I’ll be there!!!
Love farmer’s markets. The one here in town also has an awesome restaurant.
I’m interested to see how the 70-seat cafe will work out. I’d be more inclined to go to a farmer’s market if there was hot food AND seating!
Hello Cat!
We make our rounds at the Farmers Market every week. It’s either KCC on Sat or Tuesdays, Blaisdell on Wed. or Ala Moana Sat. For sure we will be going to the Kakaako Farmers Market.
I love farmer’s markets. At this market, I like the croissants (so flakey) and scones from Baker Dude. And the couple (shucks i forget their names) that just sells papaya and apple bananas has the bestest apple bananas on the island. Seriously!
I love Baker Dude! Never had his croissants, though. Thanks for the tip!
That’s good! I don’t go as often as I’d like. I should… I heard the one in Makiki is really good, too.
